Diabetic Eye Disease

Diabetes is a multi-system disease, which can have devastating effect on our quality of life.

Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness world wide.  It occurs when the fragile blood vessels of the retina (the light sensitive tissue in the back of the eye) begin to swell and then leak blood into the eye. During the beginning stages of the disease, there may not be noticeable symptoms, so its important that diabetic patients have the eyes examined once a year.

Symptoms of Diabetic Retinopathy can be quite varied, but usually include blurry vision, loss of vision and sometimes dark spots in vision.  This is usually a result of the bleeding occurring within the retina of the eye, preventing the retina from transmitting a clear image to the brain.

Whether you have type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes, you are at risk for retinopathy.  The longer you have had diabetes, the greater the risk. It is essential to control your blood sugar levels to prevent vision loss.  Manchester EyeCare will always include a report of the status of the health of your retina, back to the physician managing your diabetes.
